Music Therapist Job Description

Job Summary

The primary responsibility of the Music Therapist will be to help clients with various developmental and physical disabilities through music therapy interventions. The goal of the music therapist  is to use music interventions and experiences to help clients reach their therapeutic goals by working with the client and his/her team. 

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

We are seeking highly motivated, independent, and caring individuals who will service clients with intellectual/developmental disabilities. The population may include, but is not limited to: Autism, PDD, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Psychosis, and Dual Diagnosis. 

Responsibilities Include: 

  • Provide weekly one on one music therapy sessions completed in the home or office setting
  • Communication with families and team members is essential for purposes of enhanced quality of life
  • Completion of weekly progress notes to summarize client progress toward goals and objectives
  • Completion of yearly comprehensive music therapy assessments, narrative assessments, and a music therapy treatment plan
  • Participation in quarterly review meetings along with other community opportunities, in addition to continuing education opportunities, supervision, and co-therapy services.
  • Exhibit effective correspondence and communication with all providers, family members, staff members, clients,  and all other treatment team members as applicable. Be sure to return phone calls and/or text messages within a 24-hour time frame.

Qualities and Experience Required

  • Must be a Board Certified Music Therapist 
  • Therapist must have a valid license and reliable transportation. 
  •  Must be willing to work in Indiana consisting of Fort Wayne and surrounding and/or Indianapolis and surrounding metropolitan areas

  • Projected entry level income of low to mid 30's per hour ($50,000-$70,000 annually).


Projected income is based on the average salary of FBS therapists. Entry level therapist's rate is negotiable dependent on each individual's experience and education. Therapists have the ability to build a caseload to the size they prefer, so monthly income is ultimately dependent on how each contractor manages their schedule.


It is important to note that the State of Indiana is currently reevaluating the pay rate for all Music and Recreation Therapists; therefore, this entry level pay information is subject to increase in the very near future.
